The College was established in 1979 under the then Kaduna State Sharia Court of Appeal. It was then addressed as the College of Legal Studies (CLS). It operated on many temporary sites before its merger with the Katsina Polytechnic in 1984, as one of the schools in the institution (renamed SLEMS).
